Hydraulic and pneumatic cylinder packing is a type of seal used to prevent fluid leakage from the shell to the outside and also to seal rotating shafts. This type of packing is known as a double-sided iron or metal packing due to its special structure, which consists of two sides of metal or iron.

One of the most widely used materials for this packing is the oil-resistant NBR material, which is used to seal oil and grease. This material has high heat resistance and can withstand temperatures above 150 degrees Celsius. At this temperature, the oil or fluid around the sealing edge may burn and cause carbon formation, which causes disturbances in the performance of the seal bowl.

Other factors that can cause seal bowl failure include dry running, dynamic stiffness, friction coefficient, sealing parts, and radial contact.

What is double-sided packing?

  • A double-sided packing is a type of rubber packing that acts as a dynamic seal in systems such as pumps and jacks. This packing is responsible for sealing and preventing fluid leakage in these equipment.

Double-sided packing is also known as metal or spring packing. The structure of this packing is designed in such a way that both sides of it have metal or iron. For this reason, it is called double-sided iron packing or double-sided metal packing. This feature enhances the strength and efficiency of the packing in harsh conditions.

NBR (Nitrile Butadiene Rubber) is used as an oil-resistant material for double-sided packing. This material is suitable for sealing fluids such as oil and grease, and is widely used in industrial equipment due to its high resistance to oils and lubricants.

The double-sided packing, with its malleability properties, can adjust the amount of compression on the sheath. In this way, it can be placed as a sealing gasket in the shaft or piston environment and prevent fluid leakage. This feature makes the double-sided packing effective against various pressures and operating conditions.

In the seal bowls, there is a rubber lip that is reinforced from the back with a circular spring. This spring improves the sealing performance of the seal bowl. In most seal bowls, a rubber lip is also provided to prevent foreign materials and contaminants from entering the equipment. These lips play an important role in protecting mechanical systems and increasing their useful life.
