Various methods are used in the production of parts, which are divided into two categories: machining and non-machining.

One of the oldest and simplest non-machining methods is mold production. In this method, the raw material is formed by injection or compression into the mold cavity.

Accuracy in mold design and construction is of great importance, because any error in mold construction directly affects the quality of thousands of manufactured parts. Therefore, choosing the appropriate mold design and construction method is the main factor in the accuracy and final shape of the part.

The manufacturer must choose the fastest and most economical method of producing the components, taking into account the design and accuracy of the mold. For this purpose, careful examination of the drawings and preparation of a process design sheet is necessary to determine the best production method based on the shape, material and accuracy of the part.

It is necessary to know the material and hardness of the parts, because parts such as the mandrel and matrix are hardened through heat treatment.

Grinding is the only method of removing hardened parts, but more modern methods such as spark and wire cutting also allow machining of these parts.

Mold design and production process

At this stage, the technical specifications of the desired part, dimensions, material, and allowable tolerances are reviewed. Also, the production quantity and working conditions of the part are taken into account to select the best type of mold.

Using engineering software such as CATIA, SolidWorks or AutoCAD, the initial design of the mold is done. At this stage, the design of the mandrel and die, the method of injection or compression of the material, and the mechanisms for opening and closing the mold are determined.

The mold material is selected based on the type of part, production pressure, and number of cycles required. For high-volume parts, hardened and wear-resistant steels are selected.

Mold parts are made and finished using machining methods such as turning, milling, grinding, and precision machining methods such as wire cutting and spark.

After the components are manufactured, the mold is assembled and undergoes initial testing. At this stage, the performance of the moving parts, dimensional accuracy, and ejection of the part from the mold are checked and any necessary modifications are made.

After initial testing, the mold is optimized and prepared for mass production. This stage includes final operations such as hardening, plating, and lubrication of components to increase the durability of the mold.
